Over the Knee Exclusive

Totally Bound speaks to the authors featured in our brand spanking new anthology, Over the Knee.

What is it that drew you to write for the spanking anthology?

Katy: How could I not? When my editor mentioned it I immediately began thinking of a storyline. BDSM, D/s and spanking in particular, is what I love writing about. There’s something so erotic and sensual about spanking that I couldn’t wait to get started on it. So, it was the theme but also the opportunity to be included with other authors that drew me. Writing is very solitary so it’s lovely to be part of a group of fellow authors who share the same interest in spanking and BDSM as myself.

Lily: I’d read about ginger figging a while ago and been pondering on writing about this old Victorian kink - shaping a piece of fresh ginger root into a butt plug and letting the heat build! So combining the ginger figging with a spanking seemed the perfect direction to go. I didn’t complicate the story, I wanted it to be all about the anticipation, watching the root get peeled, waiting for dinner guests to go before the main course really got underway. I also started out with a couple in an established D/s relationship so that I had a great foundation of trust from the get-go. It was fun to write, though I may have squirmed on my seat a few times. I hope that my story is a little bit different for widely read BDSM and spanking readers.

What appeals to you most about writing a BDSM relationship?

Ashe: I have always been intrigued more by the emotional and psychological aspects of BDSM that the physical (though I confess the physical is a close second). I suppose the clue is in the word relationship, which implies much more than just a casual hook-up or a one-time fun-fest.

In a BDSM relationship trust is everything. Partners must communicate, and absolute honesty is a given. It’s a delicate balance of vulnerability and total control, of power given and received. A Dom is the ultimate carer, taking the submissive on a sensuous but potentially dangerous journey, making it safe but without losing the ‘ouch’ factor. He knows his sub, knows her ‘tells’, is tuned in and focused. How often are we so totally the centre of another’s attention? It’s a rare treat.

For BDSM to be the mind-blowing experience it can be, there has to be so much more emphasis on what goes on between the ears than between the legs. A good Dom knows this and plays to it and that mind-fuck aspect is what I love to read about. I try to capture that essence in my stories.

Wendi: I like the power play between them and the trust involved. Many people don't understand the exchange and the trust involved. By allowing themselves to be dominated, the submissive has a lot of power. I love being able to write characters who learn to embrace the power and their place. I love seeing them grow and become stronger because they've accepted themselves, too. Plus, writing BDSM is hot. The topic opens up a lot of avenues for learning on my part and giving characters a happy, hot ever after.

What aspect of BDSM excites you the most?

Lily: What aspect doesn’t excite me! I’m talking as a writer here BTW! The dynamics to play with in a D/s relationship are a veritable feast when it comes to characters having new experiences. It’s an endless list of toys and dialogue when it comes to writing sex scenes. Because let’s face it, you put A into B and jiggle about, there are only so many ways you can write that, but throw in BDSM, a whole pile of emotions, angst, pain, passion a box of goodies (found at home, a hardware store or a sex shop) and it makes for pages and pages of delicious erotica that can go in a thousand different directions.

Lucy: If we’re talking on a personal level… then I’ll never tell ;) But if we’re talking about writing BDSM… wow, where to start? I love the fact that it’s a whole new world to put characters in and play around with them. They can divulge in favourite kinks, or try out new ones… the possibilities, sensations and orgasms are endless. Though I must admit that I do quite enjoy penning me some femdom. There’s just something about a dominant woman that gets my fingers flying over the keyboard.

What’s your favourite aspect of your short story?

Ashe: In the Eyes of the Law is a sweet story about a couple who lose each other but somehow manage to find their way back. They both made mistakes in the past, perhaps her more than him, but they’ve grown and matured and are ready to try again.

I like to think much of life is life that. We all screw up sometimes, become derailed by circumstances, but rarely is there no way back, no way to rewind and try again.

This is a sexy story too. The D/s dynamic was at the heart of their previous relationship and it is this which brings them together again. It is how they connect, at least initially.

Dolly: My heroine, Emma, is an archivist who’s assessing the private library of Leo, a handsome young earl. The collection turns out to contain some rather saucy Victorian spanking diaries. My favourite scene occurs when the Earl catches Emma poring over one of the books. A conversation follows which is steeped in awkward embarrassment and teasing as Leo attempts to elicit a confession of arousal from Emma. They’re even drinking tea at the time. “Milk and sugar?” asks Leo before continuing to probe. The scene’s full of tension. While everything on the surface appears to be in order, we know that underneath that politeness these two people are getting hot!

Do you enjoy writing short stories?

Dolly: I adore writing short stories! I love getting to the heart of a tale in such a short space and also the challenge of creating characters who seem easy to get to know but who still have space to grow and flourish. When I start writing a story, I’m reassured to be able to see the ending, even if it’s blurry! But I’m a newbie to the genre so only have experience of writing of writing short-length fiction. I have to confess, I’m very bad at finishing stories and imagine I’d be even worse at novels. But one of the great things about ebooks and writing for Totally Bound is there’s flexibility in word length. A story doesn’t have to be shoehorned into a fixed limit, it can find its own length. I like that. It means the story is the boss!

Katy: I haven’t written that many to be honest. So far the only short stories I’ve written have been freebies on my website and one on the Totally Bound website. I did enjoy writing Kneel For You, though, and have now decided to write another one when I’ve finished the second Dominion book. It’ll be based on a couple of characters from the first Dominion book so I’m really looking forward to start working on that.

Are contemporary stories your favourite to pen?

Lucy: Not necessarily. I don’t really have a preferred genre to write. My favourite story is often the one I’m writing at the time. Likewise, my favourite characters are often the ones I’m writing at the time. Having said that, at other times I’ll be writing something that I want to hurry up and finish, convinced I’ve written a pile of rubbish. Luckily, most of the time I’ll go back and re-read it and find it’s not that bad, after all. In the case of Properly, Or Not At All, I loved writing this cheeky (no pun intended) tale of a hot-for-each-other couple who had some barriers to overcome to get their kink on ;)

Wendi: I love to write contemporary, but I'm not sure I have a favorite. It's tough. What one person or group of people consider contemporary can be seen as not quite contemporary by others. It's an interesting juggling act to make sure the work really works as a contemporary. But that said, I like the balancing act and hope my contemporary works meet the marks for the readers. Another genre I enjoy writing in within the romance genre is paranormal. Playing with creatures of the night in a contemporary setting is fun!
