“I hope you can handle that position, cupcake,” Blake said with a clichd wink and finger point. He had one leg slung over the corner of his desk so his crotch was displayed and pointed right at her.
“Yeah...thanks,” Tawnie said with professionalism that barely covered her disgust. Blake had been all over every girl who walked through this agency, and some of the idiot young things had actually slept with him thinking it would get them better positions. As far as Tawnie could tell it hadn’t worked for any of them. She’d never fallen for his cheap lines and knew she wouldn’t, no matter how desperate for a job she was. She just hoped this time she was going to finally find herself with a permanent position so she would never have to enter his slimy office again.
With a shiver to shake off the creepiness of her boss, Tawnie rushed out of the temp agency building. She had the job’s address clutched in her hand. This was the fourth temp job in the last three months. She really needed a permanent position. If she didn’t find one soon she was going to end up back at home in middle-of-nowhere Iowa because even that was better than sleeping with Blake.
Just the thought of going back to her parents’ farm made her want to scream. It was not the life she had ever desired and she refused to give up on LA without a fight. She didn’t want to be one of those women, the ones who left with big dreams and slunk back with broken spirits. She had seen far too many of them when she was growing up, and the light in their eyes was dead. She knew it would be the same for her, knew that town would kill her spirit. Her fingers clenched around the address. This was her chance to keep that from happening.
She was determined to do this job more than just well—she planned to do it better than anyone ever had. If she did, there was a chance of permanent employment. Even if the woman had specifically said the job was emergency part-time work it didn’t matter. Many of the other girls at the agency had gone off on similar requests to find themselves with permanent positions. She prayed it would be that way for her this time.
The job was at a candy shop downtown, a very high-priced candy shop, Tawnie knew. She’d been in Debra’s Sweets only once. The price of a bonbon had been more than she’d made in an hour at the crappy diner job she’d had at the time. She hadn’t bought anything and she’d never gone back in. No reason to torture herself with looking at things she couldn’t touch.
Today she would walk in as an employee, and if she was lucky there would be a chocolate kick-back for working there. Her mouth watered at the thought of dark spicy chocolate melting on her tongue. She could almost feel it sliding around her mouth as she savoured each delicious bite. It was too much. Her stomach growled—she had skipped breakfast because she’d been running late, as usual. Not a great way to go into a new job.
I read, write and soak up the sun…well, as much as possible in the cold north of Idaho. I live with my beautiful daughter and fat cat. I write for the pleasure it brings me and hope that it will bring as much pleasure to whoever reads it.
